Hair
For silicone dolls, you can choose from 2 hairstyle options: implanted hair and a wig. Each option has its own pros and cons.
Type 1 — Implanted Hair
With this hairstyle type, the hair is implanted directly into the doll's head material. Each hair is implanted by hand, which gives the most natural, human look and imitates natural hair growth.
Features
The main advantage of this hairstyle is realism. A doll with implanted hair looks more natural than one with a wig. A natural hairline, parting and hairstyle outline are only possible with this hair type.
The main drawback is that it needs particularly careful handling. However securely the hair is fixed into the material, it's still prone to shedding with careless use.
It's also worth bearing in mind that, unlike a wig, implanted hair can't be replaced. A wig lets you change the hairstyle whenever you like. Implanted hair gives the doll a single, fixed hairstyle. You can, for example, put your doll's hair into braids. But you won't be able to change it to bright pink to completely transform her look.
You can use a hairnet and put a wig on over the top (the way real women do). But bear in mind that implanted hair is prone to shedding. So this approach is only recommended for very careful users.
Caring for implanted hair
- Brush the hair carefully using a very wide toothed comb. Don't start right at the roots, leave a gap of about 5-10cm, and gradually work your way up towards the ends, holding the section of hair steady at the base so the tension isn't transferred to the head material.
- Don't put strong tension on the hair. Don't pull the doll by the hair, especially during functional use, brushing or care. Otherwise it will pull the hair out of the doll's material.
- Don't get the hair wet. If you need to wash the doll's head, use a sponge and dry shampoo.
What it's made from
Most manufacturers create implanted hair from synthetic material. It feels very much like real hair to the touch. That said, some brands offer the option to order real donor hair. This costs considerably more, and the colour choice will be much more limited.
Which hairstyles are available
Brands provide a list of hairstyles that can be created with implanted hair. Each manufacturer has its own options. You'll find the list of possible hairstyles in the doll's customisation section on the product page.
Which head types this suits
Implanted hair can only be placed into dense material. So this hairstyle type only suits a Hard Head and a ROS head. This is naturally only referring to silicone dolls. There's no such hairstyle option for TPE models.
Some brands offer implanted hair for a soft head too. There are manufacturers who even list TPE models with implanted hair in their catalogue. But we strongly advise against these options. Hair from these heads will fall out very quickly.
Who this hair type suits
This is worth weighing against your own preferences. If maximum realism and a natural look matter to you, implanted hair is a great choice. If you'd rather easily change the doll's look, a removable wig is the more practical option.
All hair is prone to shedding. And unfortunately, it doesn't grow back on a doll. However well the hair has been implanted, and however hard the brand has worked to improve this option, the doll's hair will shed during use. How noticeable this is depends entirely on how careful you are and on following the care instructions. But either way, you should be prepared for some of the doll's hair to shed.
Type 2 — Wig
This is the second possible hairstyle option for a realistic silicone sex doll.
In this case, as the name suggests, the doll's hair is a wig that's placed onto the model's head.
Initially the doll's head is bald. The wig is put on over the top and secured at the back with a clasp. There's also a mesh on the inner surface of the wig, which "grips" onto the doll's head material.
Features
The main advantage of this hairstyle is variety. You can easily change the doll's appearance. The wig has a big impact on the model's look (as do the eyes). By swapping the wig, you change the overall impression of the doll.
The main drawback is, well, that it's still a wig. So there's a line between the hair and the skin of the forehead. Because of this, a head with a wig doesn't feel as realistic as a head with implanted hair.
So we recommend ordering extra wigs along with your doll. This significantly improves the quality of the experience with your model.
Compatibility with other wigs
The doll isn't limited to the brand's "own" wigs, any human wig in the right size will fit too. The doll's head size is usually close to human size, so the choice of hairstyles is effectively unlimited. This is another advantage of this hair type: over time you can build up a whole collection of looks.
Which head types this suits
Suits any type of silicone head. Soft, hard and ROS.
Who this hair type suits
If variety and the ability to change the doll's look matter to you, definitely order this hairstyle type. Wigs are often chosen by fans of cosplay and dressing up, for whom a realistic sex doll is first and foremost a doll. With a wig, you can easily change her look. Turn a reserved brunette into a pink haired e-girl in a minute.
If maximum realism and naturalness matter to you most, then of course, implanted hair is the way to go. The hairline, natural parting and hairstyle outline can only be achieved with implanted hair.
Caring for a wig
Unlike implanted hair, a wig is much lower maintenance. But it still has its own rules:
- The wig can be washed. Use cool or lukewarm water and a mild shampoo or hair conditioner. Rinse the wig gently in the water, without rubbing or wringing it.
- After washing, blot the hair with a towel and dry the wig on a stand at room temperature. Don't use a hairdryer.
- Brush the wig with a wide toothed comb.
- Don't use curling irons, straighteners or heated rollers. Standard synthetic fibre is sensitive to high heat and can be permanently ruined. The only exception is a wig made from heat resistant fibre, but this must be explicitly stated by the manufacturer.
- Synthetic hair can't be dyed. If you want a different colour, the right solution is simply another wig.
- Store wigs on a stand or block, away from dust and direct sunlight. This keeps the hairstyle in shape and stops the fibre from losing its shine.
