Eyebrows

Eyebrows shape a doll's facial expression. They largely determine whether the face is perceived as "alive". If the eyebrows aren't well made, even a beautifully painted face can suddenly look poor. There are two ways to make eyebrows on a silicone doll. Which one is available depends directly on the head type.

Type 1 — Painted Eyebrows

This is the standard option. The eyebrows are hand painted by an artist during the head's make-up stage. With premium brands, the painting is done in several layers, imitating individual hairs, so even painted eyebrows look convincing.

Features

• The only option available for a soft head.
• The same head often comes with several different eyebrow paint templates. It's best to look at different looks for the same doll in the catalogue. To do this, search the doll's name on the site and browse the catalogue.
• Permanent paint is used to create the eyebrows, so it's not possible to change them after production.
• Like any paint, eyebrows can gradually wear away with aggressive washing and friction.

Caring for painted eyebrows

• Don't rub the eyebrow area when washing the head. Blot rather than wipe.
• Don't use harsh cleaning products on the doll's face. Only mild soap and lukewarm (not hot) water.

Who this suits

If you've chosen a soft head, there's no choice, this is the only option available. If you have a hard head or ROS, we recommend choosing implanted eyebrows, which is a free option for almost all brands.

Type 2 — Implanted Eyebrows

Each hair is implanted into the head material by hand, one at a time. This fully replicates natural eyebrow growth: the hairs have direction and volume, and cast a shadow on the skin. No painted eyebrows can compare with this option for realism.

Features

• Only available for a hard head and a ROS head. Only dense material can hold the hairs in place. Some manufacturers and sellers may offer to implant eyebrows into a soft head, but we strongly advise against this. The eyebrows will fall out very quickly.
• Hairs hold most securely in a hard head. With a ROS head, due to the softer material, shedding is slightly higher, but with premium brands the ROS head is built in several layers, which helps the eyebrows sit securely.
• The shape of the eyebrows is set by the factory according to the head template. In theory you can adjust it yourself (by plucking or trimming), but we strongly advise against this, since the hairs won't grow back.

Caring for implanted eyebrows

• Don't rub the eyebrows when washing, and don't dry them with a towel. Blot the surrounding area instead.
• Don't brush the eyebrows. If needed, gently adjust the direction of the hairs with a finger, without pulling.

Who this suits

If you've chosen a hard head or ROS and want maximum facial realism, be sure to add implanted eyebrows. They're especially effective paired with implanted hair and implanted eyelashes: the face comes together into one natural look.
