Head Type

For silicone dolls, the vast majority of brands let you choose one of three head types.

Type 1 — Hard Head

This head is made from higher density silicone (to the touch it's much firmer than the rest of the body, somewhat reminiscent of papier mâché). Because of the material and construction, a functional oral opening isn't available.

The mouth on a hard head doesn't open, and the lips feel just as firm as the rest of this type of head.

Features

  • No functional oral opening available.
  • Implanted hair can be added.
  • Implanted eyebrows and eyelashes can be added.
  • Implanted eyebrows and eyelashes are less prone to shedding than on a ROS head.
  • Make-up holds longer on dense material and wears away less.

Deeper detail and definition

The denser the material, the deeper the detail that can be achieved. The same rule applies with silicone. A hard head, being made from denser silicone, allows for somewhat more detailed work than a soft head, and even than ROS.

Compared with a soft head, a hard head will be considerably more detailed.

Compared with a ROS head, the difference is barely noticeable, especially on premium brand dolls.

Who a Hard Head suits

If you're planning to use the doll as a "decorative piece", meaning you won't be using it for its "functional purpose", this head type is worth considering.

It'll shed less hair and fewer eyebrows. This is largely because the head isn't put under strain during "functional use", since there's no oral opening.

Thanks to the denser material, the head gathers less dust and is easier to wash.

Otherwise, we recommend choosing a ROS head. For silicone models this is the gold standard. It's just as realistic as a hard head, and the doll also gets a fully detailed, anatomically correct mouth you can actually use. Also, with many premium brands, ROS heads are built in several layers, which helps the hair and eyebrows sit just as securely.

Type 2 — Soft Head

This head is made from standard silicone (the same as the rest of the doll's body).

This head type has a functional oral opening.

IMPORTANT: this opening isn't a full mouth like on a ROS head. It's simply an opening with an internal channel, similar to a masturbator. The opening is usually hidden between the lips. Sometimes the head may be made with a different mouth position (for example, a slight smile). In that case the opening is still just a channel.

Features

  • The oral opening is available for use.
  • Implanted hair or eyebrows can't be added.
  • A tongue can be added to improve the oral opening. We cover this in more detail in the Tongue section.

It's worth noting that some brands offer implanted hair and eyebrows for a soft head. However, we strongly advise against this combination. Implanted hair and eyebrows shed heavily from a soft head.

Limited detail

The denser the material, the deeper the detail that can be achieved. Because of the lower density silicone used for the head, it won't have detailing as fine as a hard head or ROS.

This is very noticeable if you put all 3 head types side by side. The soft head has considerably lower detail.

Who a soft head suits

In our view, this is an outdated head version. Right now, the gold standard for silicone dolls is the ROS head. What's more, ROS has become a free upgrade with many brands, and at a number of factories it's also a frequent promotional upgrade.

So you might choose a soft head purely to save money. Though in our view, ROS is definitely worth not skimping on.

Type 3 — ROS

ROS (Real Oral Sex, sometimes called Movable Jaw by some brands) is the most advanced head type for realistic silicone sex dolls.

This head type adds an anatomically accurate reconstruction of the human mouth. Full anatomy is replicated, from the tongue and palate through to the throat and larynx. On top of that, the doll gets a movable jaw that you can open and close.

Thanks to this, oral contact feels as realistic as possible.

We consider this head type the "gold standard" for realistic silicone sex dolls. It significantly improves the quality of the experience with your sex doll. So we strongly recommend choosing dolls with ROS.

Features

  • Adds a movable jaw and a fully detailed oral opening.
  • Implanted hair and eyebrows can be added.
  • With most brands, not every head can be made in ROS.
  • Unique upgrades are available for ROS heads, which we cover in more detail in the ROS Robotisation and Oral Heating sections.

Because of the ROS construction, with some brands the same face can look slightly different depending on head type. The movable jaw affects the overall perception of the doll. So if the studio shots were taken with, say, a hard head, the same doll with ROS may look slightly different. This is worth bearing in mind when choosing a doll.

With some brands, opening the jaw also affects the facial expression

With a number of brands, the ROS head construction is such that opening the jaw also pulls on the upper part of the doll's face. As a result, with the mouth fully open the doll takes on a "surprised" look. This isn't a problem, it's a feature, and it doesn't spoil the experience of the doll. It's also not present on every brand.

The technology keeps developing

The ROS construction keeps improving. For example, Irontech Doll and Real Lady offer the next generation, called ROS MAX: with a refined oral structure, movable eyelids and a pressure release channel. We cover this in more detail in the ROS MAX section.

Who ROS suits

In our view, this is a Must Have. This is the head type you should choose for your silicone doll.
